The first legs of the Champions League's quarter-final stage kicked off Tuesday with a pair of matches, as Sporting welcomed Arsenal to Estádio José Alvalade while Bayern Munich travelled to the new-look Bernabeu to take on Real Madrid.

Here are some of the bigger talking points from Tuesday's Champions League action.

Kane scores Bayern winner in Madrid

A wide open match between two titans at the Bernabeu resulted in a 2-1 victory for the visiting German side, who challenged their hosts to go toe-to-toe in one of the more entertaining first legs you'll see.

Luis Diaz broke the ice in the 41st minute after heavy pressure from Bayern, and just 20 seconds into the second half it was Harry Kane's turn as he slotted home a well-struck effort from the top of the penalty area to give his team a two-goal lead.

Real Madrid did well to get back into the match when Kylian Mbappé cut the lead in half in the 74th minute, but that was as close the hosts would get.

Bayern will now head home to the Allianz Arena with a slight advantage, but also with the knowledge that they can dish out as well as they can take against the Champions League's most successful club.

Gunners steal one late

It was an at-times dire outing in Portugal between Sporting and Arsenal, with the hosts seemingly content to sit back and counter while the Gunners could not muster enough magic to unlock the stingy defence in front of them.

While Arsenal held more of the possession, it was actually Sporting who seemed more dangerous with their opportunities despite being outshot at home. However, the chances for both sides amounted to little as it appeared that the match was destined for a scoreless ending.

That was not the case though, as substitutes Gabriel Martinelli and Kai Havertz combined in stoppage time to create the game's only goal as Arsenal escaped Lisbon with a 1-0 victory.

Martinelli's pace and skill was too much for the tired Sporting defenders, and the Brazilian charged in from the left flank and chipped a pass to Havertz, who timed his run to perfection and found himself 1-on-1 with the goalkeeper. The ball was in the back of the net two touches later, giving the Gunners a massive boost after back-to-back losses in  the Carabao Cup and FA Cup, respectively.
