What will De Zerbi’s Spurs relegation escape plan look like?

There is something inherently chaotic about appointing a coach as ideologically committed as Roberto De Zerbi and asking him to salvage a relegation battle with just seven games left.

It feels less like careful planning and more like a high-stakes gamble born of desperation.

Tottenham Hotspur, hovering just above the drop and starved of wins for months, have effectively chosen upheaval over stability. Rather than simplify, they have turned to one of the most complex tactical thinkers in modern football and asked him to deliver immediate results.

Still, there is a certain logic beneath the risk.

De Zerbi’s philosophy has always revolved around controlled chaos. Whether at Brighton, Marseille or Shakhtar Donetsk, his teams have followed the same blueprint: draw opponents in, invite the press and then exploit the space left behind. Possession is not an end in itself but a mechanism to manipulate and destabilise.

At Brighton, that meant building patiently from the back, often tempting pressure onto defenders before breaking lines and releasing attackers into space.

After an initial adjustment period, the rewards were clear, with impressive results and a distinct identity. His time at Shakhtar brought similar success, albeit in a different competitive context, with his principles producing a strong win rate.

Marseille, though, highlighted the risks. When everything clicked, his system was devastating. But when it faltered, it unravelled quickly. Defensive exposure and inconsistency showed how fragile his structure can be once confidence dips.

That is the concern at Spurs, where confidence and cohesion are already in short supply.

The biggest obstacle is time. De Zerbi’s methods demand repetition and bravery, and early results are rarely immediate. In a relegation fight, there is little room for a learning curve, meaning compromise feels inevitable.

Tactically, Spurs may shift between a back four and a back three, with the latter offering more security during build-up. Given the risks involved in playing out under pressure, that added protection could prove crucial.

Personnel will also dictate success. Players comfortable receiving the ball in tight areas – particularly defenders and midfielders – will be vital. The goalkeeper, too, becomes a key figure, expected to contribute actively in possession.

Out wide, attackers carry significant responsibility. De Zerbi’s system is designed to isolate them against defenders in space, making their ability to win duels and convert chances essential. Meanwhile, attacking midfielders must operate intelligently between the lines, though their roles may need to be simplified given the lack of preparation time.

Without the ball, aggression is likely. De Zerbi favours high pressing and man-to-man intensity, but such systems require precision. Without it, they can quickly become disjointed – a dangerous prospect for a team already low on confidence.

There is, undeniably, potential upside. If the system clicks even partially, Spurs could become more proactive, shifting from a passive side into one that dictates games. Structure and clarity could replace anxiety.

But the risks are just as clear. Playing out from the back invites costly mistakes, and questions remain about De Zerbi’s flexibility in high-pressure situations.

What Spurs are likely to see, then, is a compromise: a simplified version of De Zerbi’s ideas. The core principles will remain, but with fewer risks and occasional pragmatism.

Whether that is enough to secure survival is uncertain. What is certain is that Spurs’ run-in will be unpredictable – and anything but dull.
