Dean Brennan claims Barnet’s win against Crawley is best of the season

Dean Brennan described Barnet’s 2-1 win over Crawley as their “best performance” of the season.

Joe Kizzi opened the scoring with a header in the fifth minute, before Crawley equalised after a rare error from goalkeeper Cieran Slicker allowed Harry McKirdy to slot home.

Kizzi scrambled the winner with 14 minutes remaining.

“I thought the first 20 minutes we were electric, like a boxing match,” Brennan said. “The game should have been over but we haven’t been ruthless enough this season.

“We showed what we have as a small club, which is a huge heart and togetherness.”

Brennan praised Slicker, saying the goal conceded was “probably the only error he’s made this season” and highlighted a crucial save later.

“Unbelievable, probably the best I’ve ever seen and he’s a true warrior,” Brennan added.

He reserved special praise for Kizzi, who is returning from a nine-month injury absence.

“Delighted for him,” Brennan said. “He epitomises what we do here. A clever player and his mental strength is excellent. We backed him at half-time and he delivered.

“As a club we have ambition, character and togetherness. My job is to improve the players individually and collectively, and we’ll keep striving forward.”

Crawley boss Scott Lindsey said set-piece mistakes ultimately cost them.

The Red Devils remain winless in nine league games and sit just two points above the relegation zone.

“We conceded from two set-plays and we can’t defend them. If you can’t defend set-plays at this level, you’re going to concede and drop points,” Lindsey said.

“We didn’t start the game well for the first 20 minutes and were on the back foot. Then we grew into it – Josh Flint ran down the left and hit the post and we ended the first half at a decent standard.

“We weren’t dominant with the ball but showed fighting spirit. The fans were unbelievable today, and I’m so disappointed we didn’t give them something back. The players gave everything, apart from doing their jobs on set-plays that ultimately cost us.

“All our efforts came to nothing because it was down to those two moments. We’ve had chances all season that didn’t go in. It’s frustrating, but the fight and spirit in the team is pleasing.

“We didn’t play possession-based football, weren’t clean with the ball, but we matched their energy in the end. We have to keep believing.”
