Everything you need to know about the World Sevens Football

A new format. A new frontier for the women’s game. 

When eight elite clubs land in Estoril this summer for the inaugural World Sevens Football tournament, they’ll be part of more than just another competition. They’ll be debuting a new model, one that differs from the traditional 11-a-side format with speed, spectacle, and innovation. 

Tactically sharp, physically demanding, and structured to deliver decisive results, this tournament reimagines the game’s tempo and tone. And with free global streaming on DAZN, it offers fans a front-row seat to a new chapter in women’s football. 

What is World Sevens Football? 

World Sevens Football is a new 7-a-side tournament featuring senior women’s teams from eight top European clubs. Designed for fast-paced action, it trims the game to its essentials: smaller pitches, no offside rule, 30-minute matches, and no draws. If scores are level, it goes to golden goal – and if still tied, straight to sudden death penalties. 

The tournament brings together elite players registered with their domestic first teams. Each club travels with a 25-player squad, with 14 selected per match. Rolling substitutions are unlimited, but only seven players can be on the pitch at any time. 

It’s football, refined, accelerated, and reimagined for a new generation of supporters. 

Participating Clubs 

The 2025 edition of World Sevens Football features eight powerhouse clubs across the women’s game: 

• FC Bayern Munich 
• Manchester United 
• Manchester City 
• Ajax 
• Benfica 
• Paris Saint-Germain 
• AS Roma 
• FC Rosengård 

Split into two groups of four, each team will play three group-stage matches, with the top two from each pool advancing to the semi-finals. 

Substitutions  

• Rolling substitutions are allowed. No limit on how many players can be subbed in or out during a match. 
• Only seven players can be on the pitch per team.  

Tournament Format 

• The tournament spans three days. 
• 8 teams are divided into two groups (4 per group). 
• Each team plays the other 3 in their bracket. 
• Group winners and runners-up move to the Semi-Finals, followed by a Final and Third-Place Match. 

Disciplinary System 

• 1 yellow = warning. 
• 2 yellows or a straight red = immediate expulsion and suspension from the next match. 
• 3 yellows across the tournament also result in a one-match ban. 
• Disciplinary matters can be reviewed by the tournament’s disciplinary committee upon team request.
