Liverpool versus Manchester United, as it will be at Anfield on Sunday, is an occasion to increase the heartbeat.

The enmity between the clubs, their supporters, and the two cities they represent runs deep.

There have been countless memorable battles between the Reds of Merseyside and Manchester, and here DAZN News picks out five classic encounters from the Premier League era.

Liverpool 3-3 Manchester United (January 1994)

This raucous affair at Anfield is still widely talked about as one of the greatest games between the fierce rivals – certainly since the Premier League began in 1992.

For Kopites, it is remembered fondly for the way their team came back from the dead to claim a famous point and deny their old foes victory.

For Mancunians of a red persuasion, it is lamented as the night when their dashing men in black should have cantered to victory but threw two points away.

Alex Ferguson’s side steamrollered their way into an early 3-0 lead thanks to Steve Bruce’s header, Ryan Giggs’ delightful chip, and Denis Irwin’s stunning free-kick.

Liverpool, though, roused themselves and Nigel Clough scored two sweetly-struck goals in front of the Kop to make it 3-2 at half-time.

With 11 minutes remaining, home substitute Stig Inge Bjornebye crossed beautifully from the left flank, and defender Neil Ruddock arrived to plant an unstoppable header past Peter Schmeichel, sparking wild scenes in the home stands.

Manchester United 2-2 Liverpool (October 1995)

Eric Cantona returned after 248 days in the wilderness, to which he had been banished for placing his boot in the chest of a lout at Selhurst Park, but it was Liverpool who emerged as moral victors.

Granted, Cantona set up United’s second-minute opener for Nicky Butt and scored the equalizer from the penalty spot, which gave them a point.

But in Robbie Fowler, the visitors had the real star of the match, and his two brilliant goals underlined his prodigious talent.

Fowler’s brace put Liverpool 2-1 ahead but when Ryan Giggs was pulled back by Jamie Redknapp, referee David Elleray pointed to the penalty spot.

Who would take it? No doubt about that.

Up strode Cantona to level the scores and signal his return in memorable fashion in front of his adoring Old Trafford hordes.

Manchester United 1-4 Liverpool (March 2009)

Rafael Benitez's Liverpool revived their ambitions of claiming the Premier League title in remarkable fashion at Old Trafford.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s early penalty put United ahead, but Fernando Torres hounded Nemanja Vidic into a mistake and raced through to coolly beat Edwin van der Sar.

Shortly before the interval, Steven Gerrard scored from the spot after being upended by Patrice Evra.

United’s misery was summed up 15 minutes from time when Vidic, who had a nightmare all afternoon against Torres, was sent off for fouling Gerrard, and Fabio Aurelio brilliantly curled home the resulting free-kick from 25 yards.

Substitute Andrea Dossena lobbed home a fine fourth, but United went on to clinch a third successive Premier League title to equal Liverpool's record of 18 league titles.

Manchester United 3-2 Liverpool (September 2010)

Dimitar Berbatov’s brilliant hat-trick gave United a fully deserved win against the Merseysiders at Old Trafford.

The Bulgarian striker scored either side of the interval - the second a stunning overhead kick - to put Sir Alex Ferguson's side in complete control against a subdued Liverpool.

The Merseysiders were thrown a lifeline by United's frailty in defense as Steven Gerrard scored twice in six minutes, midway through the second half, from the penalty spot and a 20-yard free-kick.

Yet Berbatov scored his and United’s third with a towering header six minutes from time to seal the victory and send Old Trafford into raptures.

Liverpool 7-0 Manchester United (March 2023)

Liverpool delivered the complete performance to register the biggest win in the history of the fixture, passing their 7-1 victory over United in the 1895-96 Second Division.

Mohamed Salah became the club’s record Premier League goalscorer as Erik ten Hag’s side were reduced to so much rubble at a joyous Anfield.

Salah, Cody Gakpo, and Darwin Nunez scored two each, and Roberto Firmino also found the net to send Liverpool and their supporters into seventh heaven.
