Former Newcastle United and Arsenal striker Andy Cole has hit out at Mikel Arteta for the way he has treated Aaron Ramsdale this season.

Ramsdale was Arsenal’s first choice goalkeeper last year but in the summer transfer window, Arteta brought in David Raya on loan from Brentford, with the move set to be made permanent at the end of the season.

Ramsdale has been frozen out by Arteta for almost all of the season and it is expected he will move on ahead of the next campaign.

Speaking to Betfred, Cole criticised the manager’s approach to the player.

He said: “I think he’s been hard done by, I really do. He was so good for Arsenal last season and then all of a sudden, Mikel Arteta has gone out and got a new goalkeeper and initially claimed that he had two number ones, which was complete nonsense from day one.

“The way he’s disregarded Ramsdale has been really disrespectful. He’s mugged him off basically.”
