Alan Smith believes Arsenal's capture of Viktor Gyokeres will make them contenders for both the Premier League and Champions League this season.

The Swedish striker moved to The Emirates last weekend in a £63.5 million move, after scoring 57 goals for Sporting last season and is seen as the perfect signing to finally solve the Gunners' forward issue.

His arrival, Smith exclusively told DAZN News, thanks to Thunderpick sportsbook, should now propel his former club into the conversation for major honours in 2025-26.

"It's the icing on the cake for Arsenal. The missing piece of the jigsaw," he said.

"This is the signing every Arsenal fan has been graving. An out-and-out number 9 and someone who can get Arsenal over the line for the title.

"You saw last season when Arsenal had a striker crisis, that they struggled to score goals and dropped well behind Liverpool.

"Gyokeres will allow Arsenal to play a different style at times and move the ball forward quickly, rather than the build-up they have been employing.

"He gives a different dimension to their style, which can cause teams lots of problems. The fans would be ecstatic and competing in the Premier League and Champions League, having Goyokeres, will give Arsenal the boost they need."

With their shiny new striker in tow, Arsenal look equipped to rival champions Liverpool once again and give them a real battle in the race for the Premier League title this season after finishing as runners-up in the last three campaigns.

Smith admires the consistency Mikel Arteta's side have shown, but thinks this will be the season they need to finally lift a major trophy.

Adding, "Three second-place finishes in a row show the consistency of this side.

"But to get to first is the toughest part. They still have the hunger, they have recruited well, so no reason why this can’t be the year.

"However, Liverpool have added really well to their squad and they are the main danger as I see it.

"Man City will improve as well, so between those three teams I believe, you will see the Premier League winner and I hope it’s Arsenal who can get over the line.

"They would have learned from last season, and it’s important they stay clear of multiple injuries at the same time, which hindered them last season."
