Fulham may have won the January battle over Harry Wilson, but the longer-term fight over his future is only just beginning.
The Cottagers rejected a late approach from Everton before the transfer window closed, standing firm on their position that Wilson was not for sale mid-season.
With European qualification still within reach and Everton sitting just one place behind them in the Premier League table, Fulham were unwilling to strengthen a direct rival or disrupt Marco Silva’s attacking structure during a critical run-in.
Wilson’s contract expires this summer and, as things stand, no extension has been agreed.
If that situation does not change, the Wales international is increasingly likely to become one of the most attractive free agents in the Premier League market.
The timing is uncomfortable for Fulham, not least because Wilson has been their most productive attacking player in 2025/26.
Across 27 Premier League appearances, the 28-year-old has registered nine goals and five assists, leading Fulham for both metrics in the league.
His output has come from wide areas, with eight of his nine goals scored on his favoured left foot, underlining his importance to Fulham’s chance creation.
Wilson has also averaged nearly two key contributions per game and remains central to Silva’s attacking patterns, and a key factor in Fulham’s reluctance to sell.
"I think he's been one of the most underrated players in the Premier League for about three years now," Robert Earnshaw exclusively tells DAZN News, thanks to Gambling.com where users discover top online casinos, backing up the forward's stats.
"I think we're starting to see now that this year is his breakout year because he's now firmly a starter in that Fulham team. But also because of that, he now feels confident. He feels that he's found what works for him and the spaces and how to utilise his talent.
"He's a top player, honestly. I think what has happened to Harry Wilson in the last two years is that he's now fulfilling that potential that we saw all those years ago at Liverpool. Even with Wales, I think he's now Wales' best player."
(C)Getty ImagesWith that kind of billing, and if Wilson continues to flourish this year, the onus will be on the club to sort out what happens to the player next season.
By blocking Everton’s January approach, Fulham effectively shifted leverage away from the transfer market and onto contract negotiations.
Keeping Wilson through the second half of the season means the club must now either secure a new deal or accept the growing possibility of losing a key player for nothing.
At 28, and approaching his peak years, Wilson is exactly the kind of asset clubs aim to protect.
Wilson will line up against the very club that attempted to sign him just days earlier, offering a timely reminder that his future is closely tied to Fulham’s league position and European ambitions.
Everton’s interest is unlikely to fade, particularly with the Merseyside club expected to have greater financial flexibility in the summer.
Other Premier League sides, and clubs abroad, will also be monitoring the situation closely, with Wilson remaining a regular in the Wales setup that could qualify for the World Cup.
