Jose Mourinho returns to Chelsea tonight with Benfica as he looks to work his magic on Matchday Two of the Champions League.

The self-appointed ‘Special One’ remains a legendary figure at Stamford Bridge after guiding the Blues to an array of honours during two spells in charge.

He has won the Champions League twice, with Porto and Inter Milan, and DAZN News lists some of his finest moments in Europe’s premier competition.

Porto 2-1 Manchester United (February 2004)

Mourinho was making his name at Porto and rising to prominence as arguably the brightest young managerial talent in Europe.

The Portuguese’s side faced Manchester United in the Champions League Round of 16 with the first leg at the Estádio do Dragão.

United led through Paul Scholes but McCarthy produced two superb finishes to give Porto a crucial advantage heading to Old Trafford.

The visitors’ misery was compounded by the dismissal of Roy Keane for stamping on goalkeeper Vitor Baia.

Mourinho wound up Sir Alex Ferguson with his antics and said post-match: “I understand why he is a bit emotional.

“He has some of the top players in the world and they should be doing a lot better than that.

“You would be sad if your team gets as clearly dominated by opponents who have been built on 10 per cent of the budget.

“We had 21 shots to four. At Old Trafford, we will go there to win again.”

Manchester United 1-1 Porto (March 2004)

The pressure was on United heading into the second leg and Ferguson replaced the suspended Keane with Eric Djemba-Djemba in midfield.

United led when Scholes headed home in the 31st minute but in the last minute came high drama.

McCarthy’s free-kick was fumbled by Tim Howard and Francisco Costinha fired home to make it 3-2 on aggregate and send Porto through.

Mourinho celebrated the equaliser like a wild man, charging from the dug-out and racing along the touchline to the corner flag.

The image remains iconic to this day.

Porto 3-0 Monaco (May 2004)

Mourinho’s side capped a superb Champions League campaign with an emphatic final win over Didier Deschamps’ Monaco.

Mourinho was being lined up for a move to Chelsea and Blues chief executive Peter Kenyon was in the stands at Gelsenkirchen.

Goals from Carlos Alberto, Deco and substitute Dmitri Alenitchev ensured it was a fond farewell for Mourinho before he headed to Stamford Bridge and declared himself ‘The Special One’.

Mourinho recalled some years later: “I felt like a champion of Europe long before the game was finished.”

Chelsea 1-0 Liverpool (April 2007)

Joe Cole’s first-half strike gave Jose’s Chelsea a narrow victory in their Champions League semi-final first-leg clash with Liverpool at Stamford Bridge.

But the Reds won the return leg 1-0 at Anfield before prevailing on penalties to book their place in the Champions League final.

That meant more heartache at Liverpool for Mourinho after Chelsea had lost there to a controversial ‘ghost goal’ from Luis Garcia in the 2004-05 semi-final.

Chelsea 0-1 Inter Milan (March 2010)

Mourinho returned to Stamford Bridge in a blaze of glory as his Inter side sent Chelsea crashing out of the Champions League.

Samuel Eto's clinical strike 11 minutes from time settled a scrappy encounter and sealed a place in the quarter-finals for Mourinho at the expense of the club he left in 2007 after a hugely successful three-and-a-half years.

And the misery for Chelsea and coach Carlo Ancelotti was complete when Didier Drogba was sent off in the closing minutes after clashing with Thiago Motta.

Inter Milan 3-1 Barcelona (April 2010)

Mourinho’s Inter produced a fine first-leg display as they came from behind to beat holders Barcelona and take control of their Champions League semi-final.

Barca, who had dumped Arsenal out in the last round, led through Pedro but goals from Wesley Sneijder, Maicon and Diego Milito ensured Mourinho won the tactical battle with Pep Guardiola.

Inter lost the second leg 1-0, but won 3-2 on aggregate to reach the Champions League final.

Bayern Munich 0-2 Inter Milan (May 2010)

Mourinho wrote his name into the history books as Milito’s brace inspired Inter to Champions League glory against Bayern Munich at the Bernabeu.

The victory saw Inter become the first Italian side to win the Treble and meant Mourinho became the third man in history to win the European Cup with two clubs.

He joined Ernst Happel and Ottmar Hitzfeld in earning that remarkable accolade – at the age of only 47 – and, in doing so, ended a wait of more than 45 years for the Nerazzurri to regain Europe's top prize.

Real Madrid 4-0 Tottenham Hotspur (April 2011)

Having moved to Spain to take over Los Blancos, Mourinho oversaw a thumping win over Tottenham in the first leg of this Champions League quarter-final.

Emmanuel Adebayor scored twice, Angel di Maria rifled a stunning third goal and Cristiano Ronaldo volleyed a fourth.

Spurs’ misery was complete when Peter Crouch was sent off and Madrid won 1-0 at White Hart Lane to complete a 5-0 aggregate win over Harry Redknapp’s side.

Juventus 1-2 Manchester United (November 2018)

Mourinho’s time in charge of Old Trafford lasted two-and-a-half years and this win came just a month before he was sacked.

Nevertheless, this was a victory to savour as United beat the Italian champions in Turin to give themselves a good chance of qualifying for the Champions League knockout stages.

Juan Mata curled in a free-kick with five minutes to go, before Ashley Young's set-piece was bundled into his own net by Juventus defender Alex Sandro.

Cristiano Ronaldo had put the hosts ahead with an outstanding volley against his former club – yet Mourinho’s men emerged victorious against the Serie A leaders.
