Inter aiming to avoid ignominy and Newcastle in cruise control - Tuesday's Champions League talking points

The second leg of the Champions League play-offs get underway tonight and four of the eight teams in action will secure a place in the last 16.

All eyes will be on Inter’s home clash with Bodo/Glimt as they bid to avoid an embarrassing exit, while Newcastle United’s passage into the knockout stage is all but assured after they thumped Qarabag 6-1 last week.

Here, DAZN News reporter Ross Heppenstall sets the scene for all four of this evening’s matches.

Can Nerazzurri overturn a first-leg deficit?

Bodo/Glimt have enjoyed a fairytale debut campaign in the Champions League, but knocking out Inter to reach the last 16 would surely be beyond their wildest dreams.

Few gave the Norwegian minnows – based in the small fishing town of Bodo, 200km north of the Arctic Circle – much of a chance against the runaway Serie A leaders in last week’s first leg.

Nevertheless, they claimed a 3-1 victory to leave Inter with much to do if they are to avoid serious humiliation in tonight’s second leg at Stadio Giuseppe Meazza.

Bodo are still in their off-season in Norway, yet they overpowered Inter in the second half, having beaten Manchester City and Atletico Madrid last month.

Jens Petter Hauge and Kapser Waarts Hogh struck inside three second-half minutes against Inter after Francesco Pio Esposito had cancelled out Sondre Fet's opener.

Italian aristocrats Inter have reached the Champions League final in two of the past three seasons but may need something special to progress to the last 16 tonight.

Plain sailing for Magpies

Around 2,000 Newcastle supporters made the 5,000-mile round trip to Baku for last week’s first-leg play-off against Qarabag.

And they were suitably rewarded as Eddie Howe’s side – and Anthony Gordon in particular – ran amok in a 6-1 victory.

It was the most goals Newcastle had scored in 149 European games and Gordon scored four times in the first half, with Malick Thiaw also on target.

Elvin Jafarquliyev pulled one back for the hosts in the 54th minute but Jacob Murphy confirmed their record-breaking win with his maiden Champions League goal in the final quarter.

Tonight should be a cakewalk for the Toon and Eddie Howe may shuffle his pack with greater tests ahead.

Home advantage in Atletico’s favour

Club Brugge fought gamely last week against Atletico Madrid as the sides played out a 3-3 first-leg draw in Belgium.

Brugge, who trailed 2-0 at the interval to a Julian Alvarez penalty and Ademola Lookman's strike, rallied after the break with Raphael Onyedika and Nicolo Tresoldi drawing them level.

Joel Ordonez's own goal put them 3-2 behind before Christos Tzolis drove in an 89th-minute equaliser to leave the tie finely poised.

The winners of tonight’s return leg in Madrid will face Liverpool or Tottenham in the last 16.

Germans on course to progress

Bayer Leverkusen went to Athens last week and beat Greek giants Olympiakos 2-0 in their first-leg tie courtesy of two second-half goals from Czech Republic striker Patrik Schick.

That gave the Bundesliga side their first away win in the knockout stages of the competition at the 10th attempt.

Moreover, it has left them as firm favourites to seal a place in the last 16, while Schick will look to continue his impressive scoring rate.

He has netted four goals in seven UEFA Champions League appearances under Kasper Hjulmand, averaging a goal every 107 minutes played.ck has scored four goals in seven UEFA Champions League appearances under Kasper Hjulmand, averaging a goal every 107 minutes played.
