Manchester City completed an inspired late-game comeback at Anfield on Sunday to defeat Liverpool 2-1 and stay within six points of Premier League leaders Arsenal.

Things were not looking so good for the Sky Blues inside the closing minutes of Sunday's match as a world class free-kick from Dominik Szoboszlai put Liverpool up at the 74 minute mark, following a spritied spell of play from the hosts.

It appeared as though City were on course to lose the match, allowing Arsenal to finish the weekend nine points clear at the top of the table.

Instead, Bernardo Silva helped spark a furious comeback wth an 84th-minute strike, followed by a stoppage time penalty goal from Erling Haaland after Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson committed a clear foul inside his own area.

The match ended with a prolonged period of stoppage time as the VAR check on Alisson's ill-advised tackle added to the originally alotted seven extra minutes, as did a potential Rayan Cherki goal that was called off for two fouls in the run-up — one each on Szoboszlai and Haaland for trading shirt tugs as Cherki's shot trickled towards the wide-open goal.

The end result was the Sky Blues walking away with a massive three points, which Silva admitted was necessary to keep pace with the league-leading Gunners.

"For the distance that we have to Arsenal, coming here it is the toughest place in the Premier League by far but we needed to go for another goal," Silva told Sky Sports following the final whistle of Sunday's match. "When I scored, I was happy but we needed another and Erling got it.

"Very happy, but these points count as much as any in any other game. It has been frustrating the beginning of the year because we have not done our job properly. We could be closer to Arsenal. For me, you must imagine how tough it is to win here but I am really happy.

"I feel the whole team knew before the game if we lost it then the title race was probably over. We felt like we needed to win. The hope is there and we are going to fight until the end. We need to keep doing our job that we haven't lately."
