Man United continue to 'dig a hole for themselves' after Carabao Cup defeat says former club hero

Manchester United sank to a new low on Wednesday night as League Two Grimsby dumped them out of the Carabao Cup on a dramatic night at Blundell Park.

Ruben Amorim rang the changes in his first XI, but fielded a side that contained over £300 million of talent and included summer signings Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko.

However, it was the home side who stunned Amorim's team by going 2-0 up before the break, and although United fought back to draw the game level, they lost the game in a penalty shootout that saw all eleven players take spot-kicks.

The defeat ranks alongside United's all-time most infamous cup exits and is the latest setback for Amorim following the dismal campaign last year.

Speaking exclusively to DAZN News, thanks to CryptoManiaks, former winger Lee Sharpe feels the problem lies with the Portuguese manager's system.

"The club just seems to be digging a hole for themselves," Sharpe said.

"I understand what the manager was trying to do against Grimsby, give some minutes to players who haven't managed to get on the pitch so far this season, but they still can't be losing to a League Two side.

"The formation isn't working, and the system seems to be an issue. Ruben Amorim has had enough time there now and has been able to get some players in, but it's still an issue, and it's a difficult one to solve.

"You could say that the manager is under huge pressure already, especially with a result like last night. I do like him, but it's difficult to see what changes.

"The owners have backed him, and maybe there has to be more patience. Because if they sack him, who do they replace him with, given that they've put so much faith and given the players for Amorim to play his way.

"He needs to get results, but it's a difficult situation."

The club still has a chance to help the manager and his squad, with the transfer window still open until Monday, and Sharpe believes that the club could do with reinforcements in two main areas, especially in the goalkeeping department.

"I'd like to see Carlos Baleba join, he looks like a Manchester United player and plays in an area where they still need something more," he added.

"It's obvious to say, but a new goalkeeper is needed desperately. Andre Onana isn’t good enough, and you can’t keep conceding goals from a goalkeeping error and expect to win games.

"I also hope Kobbie Mainoo stays. He's in a tricky situation because he's a young player with loads of ability, but he is going up against the club captain who starts every week.

"Personally, I would consider Mainoo instead of Bruno Fernandes in that position. But we'll have to see what happens."
