Kevin De Bruyne and Riyad Mahrez inspire Manchester City to win over Manchester United

Kevin De Bruyne and Riyad Mahrez inspire Manchester City to win over Manchester UnitedDAZN
Manchester City dominated a one-sided derby clash at the Etihad Stadium.

Two goals each from Kevin De Bruyne and Riyad Mahrez helped Manchester City cruise to comfortable win against rivals Manchester United in the cold March sun.

From the opening whistle, it was clear United wanted to slow the pace of the game down, but that lasted for all but four minutes after De Bruyne put City in front with his 50th Premier League goal.

A cross from Bernardo Silva found the Belgian who slotted the ball into the back of David De Gea’s net.

United did show glimmers of promise, a chance from Fred shortly after De Bruyne’s opener was saved before former City academy product Jadon Sancho scored the equaliser for the Reds with an impressive curling finish.

It wasn’t long until City restored their lead however, Again, it was De Bruyne with the goal as he lashed home a loose ball following some pinball inside the United penalty area. Efforts from Phil Foden and Silva were blocked before De Bruyne scored.

It was then all one-way traffic as City continued to press for a third with unsuccesful chances from Foden and Mahrez in the final stages of the first half.

City continued to dominate in the second half and made it 3-1 after a De Bruyne’s precision ball from a corner found Mahrez on the edge of the area who scored with a half volley.

United’s discipline began to faulter with many players resorting to fouls as a result of frustration. The Reds struggled to create any clear cut chances amongst the backdrop of partying City fans and were further humiliated with another Mahrez goal in the closing stages of the second half.

The Algerian’s finish was initially ruled out for offside before VAR overturned the decision.

For City, it was an impressive performance and one which sees them restore their lead at the top of the Premier League to six points, while United now drop out of the top four in what is already a tight race for UEFA Champions League football next season.
