Mohamed Salah will leave Liverpool at the end of the season, but has the Reds legend already played his final match for the club?

The mercurial Egyptian has made an indelible mark at Anfield during his 10 seasons with Liverpool, helping the team win numerous trophies including two Premier League titles and a Champions League crown. Individually, Salah is the highest-scoring African player in Premier League history with 191 goals, and he holds the club records for most goals in a debut season (44), most total goals in the Champions League (46), and most goal involvements of all time (277), among many more.

It's fair to say that the 33-year-old's story as a Liverpool superstar is an overwhelmingly positive one.

But could the final chapter of that story be shrouded by a personal issue between Salah and current Liverpool manager Arne Slot?

Salah has, for the second time this season, taken aim at the direction of the club, with his latest comments coming after Liverpool's 4-2 loss to hosts Aston Villa. Slot had already sidelined the "Egytian King" earlier in the campaign for Salah's public criticism, and now the manager has been put in a position in which he might feel like he has to leave the player out of his final match at Anfield before leaving Liverpool.

Should Slot refuse to play Salah this weekend? Or does the player's stature demand at least a cameo for the fans at Anfield? Our DAZN News panel gives their opinion.

Should Mo Salah be allowed to play final match for Liverpool this weekend?

Ash Rose

Mo Salah has put his manager in a real pickle ahead of the final game of the season, which should have been a farewell afternoon to one of Anfield’s greatest ever.

Sunday should be Salah’s day for all he’s done of the club, but by taking that jibe at Arne Slot it just doesn’t feel right that the Dutchman should swallow that and start the Egyptian against Brentford. Whether there’s merit in what Salah said - and some fans will argue there is - it could be comments left to a later date when he and the club have parted ways.

Now, all it’s done is put a dark cloud over his finale and the final game of the season. Should he play? Yes, but maybe don’t start Salah.

Slot needs to show he can’t be undermined, especially as he’s already under pressure at Anfield. Allow the player to have his moment by bringing him on in the second half, almost being the bigger man, but also show that going forward the club is not about him and is not a nostalgia act.

As for his legacy, people will forget in the end. I don’t agree with what he did, but in time, fans will cling to the moments that matter rather than a social media outburst days before his final game. The crown hasn’t completely slipped off Salah’s head.

I don't think there's any way Salah should be in the starting XI, and if it was a lesser player he wouldn't be in the squad at all.

However, the player's glittering history with the club buys him a ton of leeway, even with his latest tirade being his second of the season. Salah's frustration surely matches that of many of the Liverpool fans this season, and given the number of current Reds players who 'liked' his Instagram post it seems as those many in the team agree with his sentiments.

However, Slot is the manager and needs to act as such. That means he has to show that these public displays questioning the direction of the club cannot be tolerated — regardless of how popular Salah's comments were in the dressing room.

Like my colleague Ash Rose, I think Slot has the opportunity to show that he's in control and extend an olive branch towards a massively well-liked player by giving Salah a late cameo in front of the adoring Anfield crowd. But anything more than that should be out of the question.

Salah’s latest volley at his manager, in time, will be long forgotten. Memories of his near-decade of attacking dominance with Liverpool will focus on the goals, the trophies and the countless breathtaking moments he authored.

Even so, Salah’s unwillingness to temper his understandable frustration is disappointing for a player of his experience and standing. He should still play in Liverpool’s last game of the campaign because the matter is bigger than Slot, bigger even than Salah. It’s about giving the fans one last chance to see their departing hero in action.

Over the summer the Anfield hierarchy will reckon with this lost season and begin to plan for a future without Salah – perhaps also without Slot. Right now, snide snipes from the star player don’t serve any worthwhile purpose.

Draw a line under it. Move on. And deliver a fitting farewell to one of the finest players the club – and this country – has ever seen.

After his recent comments criticising Arne Slot, Mohamed Salah has ended his time at Liverpool on a sour note.

His comments will have resonated with the fanbase, but criticising manager Arne Slot in public will have brought a toxic atmosphere to the dressing room, and having Salah still around the team may bring a toxic atmosphere to Anfield on the final day of the season.

While Salah does deserve to say farewell to Liverpool’s fans, and play on the hallowed pitch one last time, I would not be surprised if Slot gets rid of the Egyptian altogether in the final game of the campaign to send a message to the fans and other players that no one is bigger than the club.
