National League games this week: Relegation and play-off battles come to the fore

With the top two not in action, the relegation and play-off battles headline a midweek offering of National League football.

Rochdale and York City both picked up wins on Saturday afternoon in what has been an exhilarating title race, with the sides separated by just two points.

Elsewhere, Gateshead and Morecambe picked up statement wins on Saturday afternoon to close the gap on Brackley Town, who lost out in an eight-goal thriller to promotion hopefuls Boreham Wood.

With all of Tuesday's fixtures available to watch live on DAZN, here is the pick of what to look out for.

National League matches this week

Southend United vs. Gateshead

  • Date: Tuesday, March 10
  • Time: 7.45pm (Available to watch live on DAZN)

Southend United will be striving to leapfrog Halifax Town and reinstate their position in the top seven when they host resurgent Gateshead at Roots Hall.

Kevin Maher's side recovered a two-goal deficit to draw 2-2 with promotion challengers Carlisle United on the weekend in front of a 10,520-strong crowd.

While it will certainly be considered a point gained by the Shrimpers, the result meant that they dropped out of the play-offs in place of Halifax, although they do have four games in hand on their rivals.

Gateshead appeared dead and buried just weeks ago, but now they have narrowed the gap on 20th-place Brackley to just four points as they set their sights on the unthinkable.

The Heed came from behind to clinch a 2-1 victory at Solihull Moors on Saturday afternoon and have now picked up 13 points from their last six matches.

Scunthorpe United vs. Sutton United

  • Date: Tuesday, March 10
  • Time: 7.45pm (Available to watch live on DAZN)

Scunthorpe United appear nailed on for a place in the top seven and will now be aiming to build momentum ahead of a looming play-off campaign.

Andy Butler's men defeated Yeovil Town 3-0 in a rampant performance at Huish Park to end a run of six matches without a win, with Leo Farrell scoring a brace.

The Iron occupy sixth position with a 10-point cushion on Southend, while they also have as many as two games in hand on the teams around them.

Sutton United suffered a humbling 5-0 defeat at home to Morecambe on Saturday and will have to do without Junior Ecclestone for three matches after he was given a straight red card.

The U's have a six-point advantage on the drop zone, but with several teams at the bottom picking up wins, they need to ensure they do not get sucked further in.

Eastleigh vs. Brackley Town

  • Date: Tuesday, March 10
  • Time: 7.45pm  (Available to watch live on DAZN)

Two teams sitting side-by-side towards the bottom of the National League table go to war on Tuesday night as Eastleigh host Brackley Town.

The Spitfires fell to a 3-1 defeat at York on the weekend despite taking the lead through Aaron Blair, and have now picked up just one win from their last five.

Brackley delivered a valiant performance in their 5-3 defeat to Boreham Wood, but must now pick up victories if they are to avoid slipping into the bottom four.

The Saints have lost their last five league matches, although they have played the likes of Rochdale and Southend in that time.

With the strugglers perched just above the drop zone and with only three points between them, this one is the definition of a six-pointer.
