Oldham boss Micky Mellon ‘disappointed’ after stoppage-time penalty miss

PA

Oldham manager Micky Mellon felt it was two points dropped against Chesterfield despite coming back from behind in a 1-1 draw at Boundary Park.

Chesterfield led at half-time through Adam Lewis’ 21st-minute strike before substitute Kane Drummond equalised in the 59th minute against his old club with his first league goal for Oldham.

The Latics had a glorious chance to win the game when Drummond won a penalty in the second minute of stoppage time, for which Kyle McFadzean was sent off, but Joe Garner had his spot-kick saved by goalkeeper Zach Hemming.

Mellon said: “When you get last-minute penalty kicks, you would have to say you would expect to have won the game.

“But it takes a lot for people to stand up and take penalties, so I admire that, but of course I’m disappointed we don’t slot it and win the game.

“That’s the difference, that’s why we’ve drawn another game because we haven’t taken that opportunity of being clinical enough at times to turn that draw into a victory.

“That’s the next stage we have to do in order to try to take ourselves to the next stage.

“It was a hard-fought game, but we’ve missed some big chances to win the game and that’s probably the difference in what we have to become and what the teams at the right end of the table are.

“We’ll work towards being that team that takes those opportunities.”

In a dramatic finale, Chesterfield had a couple of stoppage-time efforts blocked following Garner’s saved penalty, before Manny Monthe missed a close-range header from a corner.

First-team coach Gary Roberts said: “Kane’s been playing well for Oldham but he’s lacked goals but it was his day today. He was always going to score against us.

“He’s a ball of energy, we knew that, we signed him. That was a big game for him against his old club.

“I’m happy he’s got his first goal but just not against us. He caused us a lot of problems, as well as Joe Quigley, he was outstanding.

“We brought the pressure on ourselves. We controlled the first half, apart from a Quigley chance I thought we were quite controlled, but we lost our way a tiny bit.

“After Kane got his goal, I thought we took control again, we had a good chance, they had a couple of half opportunities, and then the game went a little bit carnage towards the end when we lost a player and it was backs to the wall.”
