The United States can secure advancement into the knockout stages of the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup with a draw or win against Portugal on Tuesday.
The teams meet on the final day of Group E play, after an explosive second set of matches saw the WWC favourites draw 1-1 with 2019 runners-up Netherlands while Portugal defeated Vietnam. That puts the USWNT in first place, Netherlands in second and Portugal in third, but only a single point separates the three teams.
It should be expected that the Dutch will defeat the already eliminated Vietnam, who have yet to score a goal, putting the onus on the USWNT to take care of business against Portugal. While it may seem improbable, a scenario exists where the U.S. loses to the Portuguese, likely eliminating the Americans from the tournament.
For the sake of their goal to win a third consecutive Women's World Cup, the United States will have to make sure that doesn't happen.
Here's how you can watch.
The match will take place at Eden Park in Auckland. New Zealand.
