There were several conclusions to draw from Matchday four of the new Premier League season, even away from the VAR mayhem at Old Trafford.Â
Coventry's damaging home thrashing at the hands of Brighton has signalled an early panic for the Sky Blues, while Spurs fans continue to scratch their heads at the continuous underperformance from their team - who are still without a win or a home goal.Â
There are tweaks to be had at Stamford Bridge and Anfield if they are to challenge for honours under their latest bosses, but what's already clear is what's happening at the top of the Premier League.Â
Take a peek at the table, and you'll see last season's top two already pulling away from the rest, so are we already down to two in the Premier League title race?Â
Before the start of the campaign, Arsenal were clear favourites to retain the Premier League title for the first time in their history, and they've done nothing to suggest that won't be the case.Â
Four games, four wins and only one goal conceded show that the Gunners mean business and are going to take some stopping in making it back-to-back championship wins.Â
They've achieved maximum points without the injured William Saliba and have already bettered two of their more disappointing results from last year's triumphant campaign.Â
The North Londoners suffered defeat at Villa Park and dropped points at Sunderland in 2025-26, but they've navigated both those away days with business-like victories and rarely looked like being in danger of repeating the results from last term.Â

New signings Bruno Guimarães and Ezri Konsa have slotted in without disruption, with the Brazilian cementing his arrival with the opener at the Stadium of Light as Arsenal recorded their fourth straight win.Â
However, it's perhaps Martin Odegaard's return to form and fitness that will be most encouraging for Mikel Arteta and his bid to win a second title.Â
The Norwegian was far from his best last year, even though he played his part in the history-making season, but he's come back after an impressive World Cup and looks to be back to near his best.Â
Man of the match against Chelsea and again in the Gunners' opening Champions League win against Napoli, it's like the team has been given an added boost of quality to rubber-stamp their authority on this season's Premier League.Â
Four points better off the rest of the league already, it looks like the only team that can stop them is the only other side to have started the season with an unblemished record.Â
David Moyes and Unai Emery will attest to how hard it is to follow in such a legendary name's footsteps at a football club, but so far, so good for Enzo Maresca and his mission to move on from the Pep Guardiola era.Â
City also have four wins from four, with the last of those victories coming with the sweet satisfation of beating their neighbours on their own patch - something they failed to do in 2025-26.Â
Maresca is also doing it his way, albeit not too dissmolar from his predecessor. City top the rankings for most completed passes in the Premier League already this season, a full 300 more than their nearest rivals and in Elliot Anderson they have the man who's made more touches than any other player.Â
Manchester City
A sign of where those passes are coming from is evident too in the player who's completed the passes, too, with centre-back Ruben Dias the league's leader, proof of how well Maresca's side are already at building from the back.Â
That win over United, though, also showed they are more than just a passing machine. The little bit of bite Enzo Fernandez has brought to the club was on full display as he became a disruptor and added a touch of nastiness that goes with any side ready to challenge.Â
Then up front, Erling Haaland is doing what he does best and already tops the goalscoring charts as he guns for a record fourth Golden Boot.Â
Is it enough to topple the Gunners? That is the only question we can't answer, as we're yet to see if Maresca's Manchester City have the longevity in what they are doing to keep up with the champions.Â
What is clear, though that even after just four rounds, the gap has already been created, both mathematically and mentally by both these sides.Â
A trip to Brighton is next up for Arsenal, which you'd say could be a potential banana skin, but so far they've played like a team who can avoid those better than anyone.Â
For City, it's a home tie against Sunderland and it's easy to see both teams going into the international break with maximum points from five games.Â
From then on it's a battle between the two at the top of the league, because it already looks like they are at a party that no one else is invited to.Â
