Serie A weekend round-up: Roma fail in title battle as reigning champions win showdown

The Serie A title race took its latest twist this weekend as once again, Roma couldn't lay down a marker at the top of the league as they were bested by the current champions. 

Elsewhere, there were big wins for both Milan clubs and a first victory for the new man in charge at Atalanta. 

Here are the big talking points from Serie A's  Matchday 13. 

Roma fail in another title showdown 

As the fascinating title race continues in Serie A, it was Napoli who narrowly got the better of previous leaders Roma in the biggest game of the weekend. 

David Neres' goal ten minutes before half-time was enough to settle the tactical battle, where openings were rare in a game as tight as predicted before kick-off.

The victory sees Antonio Conte's side sit level on points with Milan at the top of the league, with the Rossoneri leading on goal difference. Roma and Inter are a point further back in the top four. 

It was a disappointing day for Roma, who, having started the day two points ahead of Napoli, failed once again to slay one of their rivals at the top and really push home their championship credentials. 

It's been an impressive start for Gian Piero Gasperini, but his side have now lost to Inter, Milan and Napoli at crucial moments this season, at which they couldn't have really taken control of the battle at the top. 

Big names turn it on 

This weekend felt like a weekend when some of Serie A's bright names flexed their talent and made the difference where it mattered - especially in the top six. 

Inter's win over Pisa came with two more goals from Lautaro Martinez, as he went ahead in the top scorer charts, while Kenan Yildiz scored a brace of his own as Juve got a much-needed win over Cagliari. 

Christian Pulisic's latest absence wasn't felt either, as Rafeal Leao stepped up once again this campaign to nab the winner against Lazio and send Max Allegri's side to the top of the pile. 

Nico Paz also kept his creative spark, laying a goal for Alberto Moreno in Como's 2-0 win over Sassuolo, and Ademola Lookman was back to his best as he helped settle Atalanta's win against Fiorentina. 

 

New boss gets first win as Fiorentina misery continues 

There's still no let-up for Fiorentina at the bottom of the league, as they continue to look for a first win of the campaign as we roll into December. 

It was the battle of the bosses at the New Balance Arena as Raffaele Palladino hosted his first home tie as Atalanta manager against Paulo Viola's winless side, and it was the hosts who came out on top.

Goals from Odilon Kossounou and Ademola Lookman on either side of the break sealed the victory and meant it's now 13 games without a win for Fiorentina, who are now five points from safety in the bottom three.
