Unstoppable so far, can Harry Kane fire Bayern Munich into seventh Champions League heaven?

Only Real Madrid and AC Milan have been crowned champions of Europe more times than Bayern Munich, who lie joint-third with Liverpool in the all-time winners list on six European Cups.

The Bundesliga champions have enjoyed a long and storied relationship with European football’s premier competition, famously winning it three seasons in succession between 1974 and 1976.

As their record would suggest, that Bayern team was one of the greatest club sides in European football history.

Sepp Maier, Paul Breitner, Georg Schwarzenbeck, captain Franz Beckenbauer, Uli Hoeness and Gerd Müller were West Germany internationals and mainstays in a Bayern side who earned iconic status following their three-in-a-row.

Beckenbauer, who died last year aged 78, is universally regarded as one of the greatest players of all time, having also captained West Germany to World Cup glory with several of his Bayern team-mates in 1974.

Not until 2001 did Bayern lift the European Cup again with their fifth and sixth successes coming in 2013 and 2020.

But their start to the season has encouraged hopes they can go all the way once again in the 2025-26 Champions League.

Vincent Kompany guided the Bavarian giants to the Bundesliga title last term and they already top their domestic league with five straight wins.

A club as ambitious and illustrious as Bayern Munich need to be challenging for the top prizes and that means winning the Champions League.

With Harry Kane in the form of his life, and Kompany’s men having opened their European campaign with two wins from two, perhaps this is their time.

It is early days, of course, but it would certainly be foolish to dismiss the prospects of a side dripping with world-class talent in every department.

In England captain Kane, Bayern are blessed with one of the greatest strikers in world football.

The 32-year-old scored twice in the 3-1 win over Chelsea in Matchday One of the Champions League.

He was at it again on Tuesday night, claiming another double in the Bundesliga champions' 5-1 win at Pafos.

That left him on four Champions League goals after two games – one behind leading scorer Kylian Mbappe.

Staggeringly, Kane has now scored 102 goals in 105 games for Bayern following his £86.4million move from Tottenham in August 2023.

It feels remarkable. It also vindication of his decision to quit Spurs and embark on a new adventure in Bavaria.

Bayern won the German Super Cup in August and, after nine games, have made a 100% start to the season in all competitions.

Michael Olise, who joined Bayern from Crystal Palace in the summer of 2024, is once again proving hugely instrumental.

The London-born France midfielder was also on target against Pafos on Tuesday to register his sixth goal of the season for club and country.

Olise continues to dovetail effectively with Kane and he created the England striker’s first goal against Pafos.

And then, after several stepovers, Olise set up Nicolas Jackson for his first Bayern goal to make it 3-0.

Bayern lost 4-3 on aggregate to Inter Milan in last season's Champions League but, with each victory, belief grows that Bayern could be ready to go all the way this time around.

For Kane in particular, that would be the stuff of fairytales.
