The first half of the FIFA Club World Cup final was full of surprises, and the half-time show that followed it came with an unexpected twist of its own as Coldplay appeared on stage alongside J Balvin, Doja Cat and Tems.
ÂFIFA announced before the tournament that Coldplay frontman Chris Martin would curate the half-time show in support of the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund, which aims to raise USD $100 million to improve access to quality education. However, the British rock band was not expected to perform at MetLife Stadium during Sunday's match, as the date of the game fell during their "Music of the Spheres" world tour.
Despite this, Martin and Coldplay stepped onto the makeshift stage following performances by J Balvin, Doja Cat and Tems. The band, who were in Toronto, Canada, for a sold-out show on Saturday night, performed their 2014 hit "A Sky Full of Stars" to close the half-time show, as the other artists and their back-up dancers reappeared for the song.
