Erik ten Hag must ensure Manchester United discover their identity if they are to turn around their faltering fortunes, believes former England international Chris Sutton.
The Dutchman has started his third season at Old Trafford in inauspicious fashion, with just one win from three games so far under his belt.
A 3-0 defeat at the hands of rivals Liverpool has seen further questions asked about Ten Hag, as his side struggle to impose themselves on opponents.
Despite EFL Cup and FA Cup success so far, the pressure is mounting once more upon the United boss, and ex-forward Sutton feels he must define his team’s character if he is to revive their prospects.
“I think the criticism was they didn’t control enough games,” Sutton told casinoapps.com. “What is their identity?
“I always felt that Manchester United under Erik ten Hag are a much better counter-attacking team who can suck up pressure and hurt you on the break.
“That style hasn’t happened enough because to play like that, you must be solid and well organised.
“That structure and organisation has been missing from the majority of Manchester United’s performances. He clung onto that FA Cup win, and it kept him in his job.
"But after everything that happened in the summer, getting off to a good start was absolutely crucial. He hasn’t started well and that’s why questions are being asked at the moment."
