Speculation was rife last week that Harry Kane could leave Bayern Munich and potentially rejoin Tottenham Hotspur at the end of this season.
The England captain has proved to be one of Bayern's best signings in the last decade, breaking multiple records since moving to Germany from Spurs in the summer of 2023.
He has won the Golden Boot award in back-to-back seasons, clinched his career-first trophy after winning the Bundesliga last term and is fast closing in on 100 goals for Bayern.
Last week, though, the German publication Bild reported that Kane has a £56.7million release clause which could be activated next summer.
It is believed Tottenham have a buy-back option on and Thomas Frank would certainly be happy to work with the 32-year-old should the opportunity present itself.
“I didn’t know there was a clause,” said the Spurs boss with a look of surprise.
“He is an unbelievable player who did fantastic for Spurs and is doing fantastic for Bayern.
“I think there’s a lot of Tottenham fans, including myself, who would like to see Kane back.
“Personally, I don’t think he will do it right now if I’m honest.
“He’ll probably stay in Bayern and continue performing well. He was top scorer last year, won the championship and he’s doing fantastic now.
“But he’s welcome. If he wants to join us, he’s more than welcome!”
Indeed, Kane would be welcomed back with open arms at a club who won their first trophy in 17 years last season after beating Manchester United in the Europa League final.
Frank, who replaced Ange Postecoglou in the summer, is patiently writing a new chapter at Tottenham and would understandably jump at the chance to bring Kane back to the club.
But the London-born goal machine is surely enjoying too much of a good thing at Bayern to turn his back on the city he now calls home.
In early May, Kane celebrated the first trophy of his illustrious career after Vincent Kompany’s men were crowned Bundesliga champions.
They celebrated by beating Borussia Monchengladbach 2-0 at the Allianz Arena, having already secured the title without kicking a ball.
The raw emotion and honesty from Kane after the game was clear to see amid the bonhomie in Bavaria.
He admitted that the three Premier League Golden Boots and the Golden Boot he won at the 2018 World Cup could not compete with having his first winner’s medal hung around his neck.
“It's been a long time coming,” Kane said after he had been drenched in beer by team-mates.
“It means more than any of the goalscoring awards, for sure.
“There's no secret that there has been this one thing that has been missing from my resume.
“It was a weight on my shoulders and now it's been lifted. I've had plenty of individual accolades and been close on so many occasions to trophies, but for one reason or another, it hasn't quite worked.”
Well, it has now and Kane continues to go from strength to strength in the famous Bayern jersey. The striker and his young family are clearly happy and settled there.
This season, Kane has been in blistering form and if anything seems to be getting better with age.
He scored 14 goals in his first eight appearances of the season for club and country, which included hat-tricks in the Bundesliga against RB Leipzig and Hoffenheim.
Kane added the German Supercup to his trophy collection last month and then stuck the knife into his old Tottenham rivals Chelsea Matchday One of the Champions League; not once but twice in a 3-1 win.
That brace against the FIFA Club World Cup champions confirmed Kane remains at the peak of his powers and ripe to continue leading the Bayern line for some time yet.
Kompany’s men lost out to Inter Milan in last season’s Champions League quarter-finals, the Italian side edging it 4-3 on aggregate.
But with players like Dayot Upamecano, Michael Olise, Serge Gnabry, Joshua Kimmich and Luis Diaz in their side, perhaps it is time for Bayern to rule the roost again and lift their seventh European Cup.
With Kane such a hugely prolific figure, you wouldn’t rule out that happening – and that could keep him in Bavaria for some time yet.
Especially if the goals and the trophies keep racking up at one of European football’s biggest and most successful clubs.
