USA to win their opener vs. Paraguay

Gustavo Alfaro's men won't be a pushover by any means, with their defensive discipline making them hard to break down.

But if they're without former Brighton man Julio Enciso, who suffered an injury in the win over Nicaragua in the final warm-up match last week, they will lack one of their most important creative sparks going forward.

Yes, most of USA's recent friendlies haven't gone their way, but three of those games were against tough competition - Belgium, Portugal, and Germany.

And the win over Senegal, a team that featured among our dark horses for the tournament, showed they have what it takes to get the job done against awkward opposition.

Granted, Christian Pulisic isn't in the best form, but on home soil, and with the SoFi crowd urging them on, Pochettino's side has the upper hand.

If Weston McKennie and Bournemouth's Tyler Adams can control the tempo, Team USA should extend their three-match winning run over the South Americans.

USA vs. Paraguay: a low-scoring affair?

Pulisic USA 16x9Jamie Squire / Staff

Paraguay know their best chance to secure a win is to keep it tight and strike on the counter.

Their record in qualifying speaks volumes about who they are: They scored only 14 in 18 matches, the joint-lowest average of any side to reach the finals, and at the other end, they conceded only 10.

With Enciso likely absent, chances may be harder to come by, and they'll also have to deal with a heavily partisan crowd cheering on their opponents throughout.

USA should score, perhaps with Pulisic nicking one, but I can't see them running riot.

Odds correct as of June 11, 2026. Recommended bets are advised to over-18s.
