Devin Haney shoved Vasiliy Lomachenko across the weigh-in stage Friday.
But he had a much harder time dealing with the crafty former three-division world champion Saturday night. Still, judges saw it all in Haney's favor as he was declared the unanimous decision winner over Lomachenko to retain his undisputed lightweight world championship at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Judges scored it 116-112, 115-113 and 115-113 for Haney, who improved to 30-0. DAZN had it 114-114.
Haney felt pure jubilation in being declared the winner, though he gave Lomachenko credit.
"I have to take my hat off to Loma," Haney said in the ring following his biggest victory to date. "He's a future Hall of Famer, he's my toughest opponent by far, he's very crafty and we put on a great fight for fans."
He added about the win: "It puts me in the history books forever — I just beat a future Hall of Famer."
Many inside of the MGM and those watching from home felt like Lomachenko imposed his will on Haney enough to win the undisputed crown.
Shakur Stevenson, who entered the ring trying to confront Haney, felt like Lomachenko should have won the bout.
Loma himself thought his hand should have been raised in victory.
"All people saw what happened today," the 35-year-old veteran said.
Although Haney started off the bout strong behind a right hook to the body that he continued to use well throughout the fight, Lomachenko turned up the heat in the latter rounds all the way to the end of the bout, peppering the undisputed champ with combinations and gaining momentum with seemingly every three minutes that passed. Some rounds were so close that they were flat out hard to score.
Yet, judges all saw it in favor of Haney.
