The UFC returns for its latest offering on Saturday night with UFC Fight Night from the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, as No. 7-ranked Paul Felder takes on former lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos.
Initially, the main event was set to be dos Anjos facing No. 12-ranked Islam Makhachev. But on Sunday evening, Makhachev had to pull out with an undisclosed injury. Needing someone to fill out the spot, the UFC offered Felder the bout. It didn't take Felder long to accept, and he'll be going from wearing a suit and broadcasting the event to putting on the four-ounce gloves in the five-round affair.
Felder, who has won five of his last seven, last fought in February, losing a very competitive split-decision to top contender Dan Hooker. Afterwards, Felder was seriously considering retirement and would only come back if the right offer came along.
"With everything going on in the world, the sad things going on in people's lives — losing their jobs and suffering. We just lost Alex Trebek to pancreatic cancer," Felder said to ESPN. "I was like, 'Man, you're still 35. You're young. You're in shape. Save the day. Let's go get paid, let's have fun. You're fighting a legend.' What do I have to lose?"
Dos Anjos moves back down to 155 pounds after struggling at welterweight as he's lost four of his last five fights. But those defeats came against top contenders Michael Chiesa, Leon Edwards, former interim titlist Colby Covington and current 170-pound champion Kamaru Usman. The last time dos Anjos fought at 155 pounds was to former interim titleholder Tony Ferguson in Nov. 2016.
Is dropping down to the weight class he ruled the remedy for dos Anjos, or will Felder walk right in on short notice and secure the victory?
