Berlanga vs Sheeraz - Edgar Berlanga explains how loss to Canelo changed him

Edgar Berlanga has reaped the benefits of sharing the ring with pound-for-pound great Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez. 

Last year, Berlanga and Alvarez clashed in September for WBA, WBC and WBO super middleweight titles, but it's a fight which the Puerto Rican would prefer to forget. 

After being knocked down in round three, Berlanga failed to offer any resistance and received plenty of criticism for his performance in a unanimous decision loss. 

Sometimes facing someone as talented as Alvarez can be a light bulb moment, and this has been the case for Berlanga who told DAZN about the improvements which have been made since that night in Las Vegas. 

"Just being poised, being calm and not looking for the knockout," Berlanga responded when asked about what he learnt from the Alvarez fight.

"All my knockouts came from me just being me, using my jab, great legs, great head movement, being alert and not getting hit with anything stupid.

"First half I’ve got to be alert, there’s going to be a lot of energy, crowd’s going to be going crazy, it’s just about me mastering this [points to his head] and that’s what I learnt from being in the ring with Canelo."

 

Berlanga was speaking ahead of his main event clash with Hamzah Sheeraz at Ring III tonight, live on DAZN PPV. 

After knocking out Jonathan Gonzalez-Ortiz in March, Berlanga is full of confidence heading into a contest against an opponent who is favoured by His Excellency Turki Alalshikh. 

Fighting in his home city of New York at the Louis Armstrong Stadium, Berlanga is ready to feed off the energy a home crowd will bring in such a high profile bout. 

"The New York energy is going to give me more power, more everything.

"On July 12, I’m ready to die in that ring, is he ready to die? I don’t know.

"I’m a f—g savage, I can’t wait to see him, I want to eat him with my eyes and tell him, I’m going to f—k you up."
