Conor Benn is set for his first world title shot following an update to his WBC ranking, which was confirmed on Tuesday.
The WBC's convention is underway in Bangkok, Thailand, and one of the many events taking place is the update to the sanctioning body's rankings.
After stating his intentions to move back to welterweight after beating Chris Eubank Jr. last month, it looks like Benn will be pursuing the WBC's welterweight title after he was made the number one-ranked fighter in their respective rankings, meaning he will be the next man to challenge the WBC's champion at 147lbs.
America's Mario Barrios is the WBC's current welterweight titleholder, and he is yet to win a fight with the green and gold belt around his waist.
After being upgraded from interim to full champion in June, Barrios has only managed draws with Abel Ramos and, earlier this year, the legendary Manny Pacquiao.
While Benn will be chomping at the bit for his long-awaited world title fight, he may be forced to wait, with Barrios linked with a fight against Ryan Garcia reportedly being arranged for February 21, 2026.
If Conor Benn gets his shot at Mario Barrios, I would not be surprised if he is made the favourite.
Barrios' performance against Manny Pacquiao in July saw him struggle in the first half before Pacquiao's age began to show in the latter stages, allowing Barrios back into the fight as the boxing legend slowed down.
I expect Benn to be on the front foot and looking to walk down Barrios, showing no respect to the American. Benn has shown that he has the power at 147. If he can successfully retain it as he returns to welterweight from middleweight, Benn has every chance of inflicting the third loss of Barrios' career.
Drawing Barrios into a firefight will play into Benn's hands. He enjoys a back-and-forth with his opponents, and his aggression can spur him on. If he can overwhelm Barrios with intense activity and shot selection, then Benn could finally become a world champion.
