Dalton Smith got British boxing off to the best possible start in 2026 with a sensational knockout against Subriel Matias on Saturday night to become the WBC super lightweight champion in Brooklyn.

With 19 professional fights on his CV, Smith has worked his way through the ranks, picking up every belt available to him.

This win over Matias has felt like the culmination of a career that has seen Smith deliver against every opponent that's put in front of him.

However, the real work now begins, with a world title around his waist, Smith will be expecting to bring big fight nights back to Sheffield whilst having a target on his back.

Who will Dalton Smith fight next?

It's only days removed from Smith's success in New York, so the celebrations are still in full flow, and there is no news when it comes to who 'Thunder' will fight next.

But when the time comes, there are many options available to Smith.

On the domestic front, there is Adam Azim. The pair have been linked for numerous years, and with Smith now a world champion, it feels like it could be closer than ever.

If Azim is not an option, then there is the possibility of a unification bout against the winner of Teofimo Lopez and Shakur Stevenson on January 31 for the WBO and Ring super lightweight title, live on DAZN PPV. For Smith, this would be a monumental task and a fight where he would be an underdog, but he is no stranger to that role.

Then there is the mandatory challenger. Smith's clash with Matias was a voluntary defence by the Puerto Rican; therefore, as WBC champion, Smith will likely be ordered to face the sanctioning body's mandatory challenger next in the form of Alberto Puello, so don't be surprised if this contest is next.

Where will Dalton Smith fight next?

It's expected that Smith will return to Sheffield for his first world title defence.

If that is the case, then it will be either the Utilita Arena or Hillsborough, the home of Sheffield Wednesday FC.
