David Morrell wants Ben Whittaker to fill the void left by Callum Smith after the latter was forced to withdraw from their fight due to injury.
Morrell and Smith were scheduled to meet on April 18, live on DAZN, and it was a light heavyweight fight which fans were excited to see.
However, the bout was postponed on Monday after Smith pulled out due to injury, with Whittaker now headlining the event against Braian Suarez at Liverpool's M&S Bank Arena.
In the immediate aftermath of Smith's injury pullout, Morrell took to Instagram to call out Whittaker, and questioned why at the age 28, he is still being labelled a prospect.
"Dimelo @benwhittaker, I'm ready to fight April 18th," Morrell wrote.
"How are you older than me and still a prospect? Let's give the fans the fight they want to see!".
After making his promotional debut with Matchroom last November, there is no reason as to why the Olympic silver medalist should not shy away from this challenge.
Whittaker may have a strong social media following, but 11 fights into his professional career, he is still yet to have the standout performance to justify all the hype that surrounds him.
Morrell may be the right opponent for Whittaker to test himself against in an attempt to show why he is one of British boxing's most exciting products.
The contest would be a tough one, Morrell has already shown he can mix it with the best after he went 12 rounds with David Benavidez last year in a thrilling affair in Las Vegas.
However, with so much stock already invested in Whittaker from Matchroom, facing Morrell would be a huge risk, but even a loss would benefit the Brit's profile as it would show that he is a fighter who is willing to take on any challenge.
It is unlikely Morrell would replace Suarez at this late stage, but after facing the Argentinian, Whittaker will need to push on in a weight division full of exciting talent at world level.
