Amanda Serrano is laser-focused on breaking Hall of Famer Christy Salters Martin’s record for the most knockouts in women’s boxing history.
Serrano, a seven-division world champion, can knot the record tonight with a knockout against Cheyenne Hanson at El Paso County Coliseum in El Paso, Texas, and live on ESPN. Serrano's WBA and WBO featherweight world titles will be on the line.
Serrano (48-4-1, 31 KOs) enters the bout with 31 knockouts, needing one to tie Martin’s mark of 32. ‘The Real Deal’ is coming off a unanimous decision against Reina Tellez in January. She faces German fighter Hanson (17-2, 13 KOs) who produced a TKO victory over Flor Rodriguez in March.
Will Serrano put her name side by side with Martin for most knockouts? Or will Hanson play major spoiler and take Serrano’s title as well? DAZN News probes into the Keys to Victory for Serrano and Hanson.
Watch Amanda Serrano work and her subtle feints allow her to steadily stalk forward on opponents, closing the distance where she could do major damage.
Hunting for that record-tying knockout, it’d only behoove Serrano to issue these feints and level changes as means to force phone booth action with Cheyenne Hanson.
Serrano is a heavy-handed puncher, especially to the body.
When she enters cramped quarters with Hanson, Serrano would be well served to make hard deposits to the body. These riveting shots could force the challenger to lower her arms just enough for Serrano to unload something of deeper impact upstairs.
Fight footage of Hanson shows she often overextends with her punch attempts. That would leave the challenger susceptible to a jab and Serrano’s vaunted left hook.
Serrano lands the latter flush, especially if it comes as a counter to Hanson overextending, and the Puerto Rican sensation could very well notch her coveted record-tying knockout.
Cheyenne Hanson needs to get inside of Amanda Serrano’s slight reach advantage.
At times, this could be achieved by following up a potshot with a burst inside. At other junctures, the German fighter might just need to plow her way inside of the jab.
Either way, Serrano’s pressure and punching power are too thunderous for Hanson to simply sit on the outside and still have a shot to win.
Hanson has a bad habit of overextending on her punch attempts and if she gets caught doing this against Serrano, it could very well spell lights out for the challenger.
To remedy this habit, Hanson must make it a conscious point to shorten up her shots to ensure they’re being thrown more compactly.
After all, compact production will negate Serrano’s chances for a stinging, fight-altering counterpunch.
If Hanson can make the southpaw Serrano miss, she should take her chances with an overhand counter right. This shot appears to be one that Hanson sits on well to leverage its maximum impact.
In a spot where she needs to quickly earn the future Hall of Famer’s respect, this might be just the weapon to deploy.
Hanson is a scrappy boxer who is going to give Serrano a fight. But with a heavy experience edge in tow, I see Serrano setting up the challenger and getting the record-tying knockout she so desires tonight. That would set the stage for ‘The Real Deal’ to etch the new mark in a fight later this year.
