Frank Bruno realised his dream in 1995 when he became world heavyweight champion at Wembley Stadium on an unforgettable night for British boxing when he outpointed Oliver McCall.
Many within the sport had given up on Bruno’s belt aspirations after previous world title efforts had saw him fall short at the final hurdle against some of the biggest names in the sport, including Mike Tyson and Lennox Lewis.
Knowing it was the last roll of the dice, Bruno gave everything against McCall and despite slowing down in the latter stages of the bout, he had done more than enough to earn the approval of the ringside judges as the huge crowd inside the home of English football celebrated.
In his first defence, Bruno would surrender the title immediately as he had no answer to the marauding approach of Mike Tyson, who stopped Bruno inside three rounds in 1996.
Seven years earlier, Tyson, in his first reign as champion, beat Bruno, but the second victory was far more emphatic and Bruno would walk away from boxing shortly after.
After sharing the ring with Tyson, Lewis, and many quality fighters, Bruno considers the man from New York to be the best fighter he ever faced.
“[Mike] Tyson had it all, the hunger to win the belts, to fight, to move and determination to take anybody down that crossed him at his peak,” said Bruno when speaking to The Ring.
“He knew the quicker he could get rid of his opponent the less chance he would get caught and he was determined to get rid of his opponents quickly.”
