Oleksandr Usyk just played a real football match with this German World Cup legend

Oleksandyr Usyk hasn't fought in a while, but that doesn't mean he's not staying in shape.

The unified world heavyweight champion has spent the past few days training with FC Polissya Zhytomyr, a Ukrainian Premier League club currently on their winter break. And Usyk didn't just train with the team — he actually suited up for Polissia in a friendly match in Marbella, Spain on Tuesday.

Usyk played about 15 minutes for Polissia as they took on the Vancouver Whitecaps of Major League Soccer. The Whitecaps are also in Spain as part of their pre-season training ahead of the 2026 MLS season, and their squad includes 2014 FIFA World Cup winner Thomas Müller.

Müller is, of course, a German legend of the game who won the Golden Boot and Best Young Player awards at the 2010 FIFA World Cup, and his impressive trophy case includes two Champions League medals and 13 Bundesliga titles during his time with Bayern Munich. Now 36, Müller joined the Whitecaps midway through the 2025 MLS season and led the Vancouver club to a Canadian Championship title and the MLS Western Conference crown.

However, Müller's presence wasn't enough to overcome that of Usyk and Polissia, who won the match 2-0.

Usyk took to social media afterwards to thank both sides for including him in their match.

"Polissya & Vancouver Whitecaps," Usyk wrote in an Instagram post. "Glad to step onto the pitch and give it my all.

"Big thanks to my team @fcpolissya for the support, character, and full commitment on the field!"
