Pat McCormack reveals when he wants world title shot after knockout win

Welterweight contender Pat McCormack believes he is just three or four fights away from a world title shot after his knockout win over Miguel Parra earlier this month.

McCormack moved to 8-0 by stopping Parra in nine rounds as he headlined in his hometown of Sunderland. The bout acted as an eliminator for the WBA welterweight title, and McCormack is now closing in on world honours.

However, the Olympic silver medallist wants to pick up domestic and European belts before setting his sights on a world title.

"I'd like to win British, Commonwealth, European and world titles, I'd like to be a world champion and set my family up," McCormack told Sky Sports. "Three or four fights [before a world title]? A few more steps up in competition.

"Obviously there's a few more boxes that need to be ticked, a few more steps up in competition and when we're ready for that, it'll come."

McCormack is trained by Ben Davison, who also has Moses Itauma, Anthony Joshua and Fabio Wardley in his stable of fighters.

Davison is keen for his charge to gain more experience, but feels he will be ready to challenge the best at 147lbs in the next 12 months.

"I don't think there's a welterweight in the world, if he was to share the ring with, that he'd feel out of place. I've felt like that for a long time," Davison said.

"Just gaining rounds, gaining experience, building his profile to the point where we can bring the right opponents for him. We can entice the people that have got the titles over for Pat to take them off them.

"We'll see. This time next year we should be talking about a world title fight."

The WBA strap is currently held by Rolando 'Rolly' Romero after he was upgraded to full champion earlier this year when Jaron Ennis moved up to super welterweight.

Romero is yet to defend his title, but has been mentioned as a potential next opponent for Manny Pacquiao after the Filipino icon returned to the ring in July.

McCormack will be keeping a close eye on Romero's next move as he eyes his shot at glory in 2026.
