Two-division world champion and boxing great Danny “Swift” Garcia ended his historic run at Barclays Center in emphatic fashion on Saturday night as he scored a one-punch KO of Queens-native Danny “El Gallo” Gonzalez in round four.
In his 10th and final fight at the arena, more than another other fighter, Garcia (38-4, 22 KOs) backed up Gonzalez (22-5-1, 7 KOs) early with a series of power punches that looked to hurt the upset-minded challenger.
"I know that I hurt him in round one, but my timing was a little off,” said Garcia. “So I decided to work behind my jab and I knew when he stopped his feet I was gonna catch him. I was just taking it round by round. I didn't underestimate him. He was in great shape. My dad told me to just stick to the game plan.
While Gonzalez was able to hang tough for rounds two and three, Garcia landed a pitch-perfect left hook early in round four that put Gonzalez down hard, ending the bout quickly and in dramatic fashion. The stoppage came at 45 seconds into the round.
After the fight, an emotional Garcia kept the door open for a potential return to the ring.
"I'm just so happy,” said Garcia. “I've done a lot in my career and this is a great way to end it all. At the end of the day, I'm healthy and I've got a beautiful family. I don't know if I'm done yet."
During his run in the sport, Garcia was impressive as he reigned as world champion in two weight classes and faced big names such as Erik Morales, Amir Khan, and Errol Spence.
