After being dropped in the first round, Tim Tszyu made the conscious decision to try to punch his way out of trouble Saturday night.
The choice was valiant and Tszyu had success digging back into their rematch, but was ultimately burned by “The Towering Inferno.”
Fundora wound up dishing out enough punishment for referee Harvey Dock to stop the fight at the suggestion of Tszyu’s corner who didn’t like their fighter’s body language at the end of round seven. With the victory, Fundora retained his WBC super welterweight world championship and improved to 26-2 with 19 KOs.
Fundora's successful Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas began with a left hand that caught Tszyu for a quick first-round knockdown.
Soon after Tszyu made it back onto his feet, he decided he needed to bite down and force his way inside to get within Fundora's 9.5 inches of reach and give himself a fighter's shot.
The strategy worked in the sense that Tszyu was able to turn the bout into a fire fight, though the champion got the better of many exchanges with the harder shots landed. Still, Tszyu had his moments, landing stiff shots on the taller Fundora.
Ironically, Tszyu produced some of his best work during the seventh round, landing stinging shots on Fundora, though the damage he sustained had taken too much of a toll as his corner wanted to end it.
Tszyu, who has now lost to Fundora twice, saluted 'The Towering Inferno' calling him the best 154-pounder in boxing.
