After a season in which he set new career highs in touchdowns and helped guide the Buffalo Bills to the playoffs, Buffalo Bills running back James Cook hopes to cash in.
Cook took to social media, commenting, "15 mill year," seemingly referring to the yearly value of the contract extension he seeks as he enters the final year of his rookie deal.
If the Bills meet Cook's demands, he would become the second highest-paid running back in the NFL, behind only the San Francisco 49ers Christian McCaffrey.
It would almost triple the projected earnings of Cook's existing contract, which is currently $5.6 million in 2025.
In recent years, the increasingly pass-centric nature of NFL offenses and the relatively short careers of running backs have devalued the position.
However, Saquon Barkley's standout 2024 season, where he set several records and inspired the Philadelphia Eagles to a Super Bowl-winning season, may have emboldened game-changing running backs in contract talks.
Cook's contributions to the Bills' offense in 2024 cannot be understated. Despite missing a game, he led the team with 1,009 rushing yards and tied first among all NFL running backs with 16 rushing touchdowns.
While Cook is undeniably talented, the Bills may have difficulty retaining him because the team has limited cap space.
If the rumours about the Bills potentially extending the contract of MVP quarterback Josh Allen are accurate, Buffalo might decide to let Cook go and turn to second-year running back Ray Davis as his replacement.
With backup running back Ty Johnson set to become a free agent, the next few months will be crucial for the Bills as they decide whether to extend Cook's deal or explore other options to bolster their backfield.
