Inter’s attack has clicked into gear, which could be curtains for Serie A's chasing pack

Over the past month, Inter Milan’s reawakening in attack has put the rest of Serie A on notice. A run of four consecutive league victories, yielding ten goals and lifting the Nerazzurri to the top of the table, has turned what looked like another tight title race into a scenario where Inter’s offensive momentum could prove decisive.

In a season where margins between the top contenders have been wafer-thin, Inter’s scoring rate and efficiency have provided a small but significant edge that could ultimately make all the difference in the 2025-26 Scudetto chase.

Inter’s recent run has been spearheaded by the lethal combination of Lautaro Martinez and Marcus Thuram. The Argentine striker, already Serie A’s leading scorer with 10 goals heading into January, has carried the attacking burden with aplomb, consistently finding the net and making decisive contributions in key moments.

Behind him, Thuram’s five league goals have added another dimension to the Nerazzurri attack, combining pace, power and an eye for a crucial finish. The result is an attack capable not only of carving open stubborn defences, but of doing so with a balance that few rivals have matched this season.

Inter’s 3-1 victory over Bologna last weekend encapsulated that balance. Martinez helped open the scoring with a neat assist before converting himself shortly after the break, and Thuram sealed the win with a confident strike in the 74th minute. They now sit atop the Serie A standings with 39 points, narrowly ahead of AC Milan and Napoli in a tightly packed top three.

What has marked Inter’s attack this season is not just volume, but efficiency. They have scored 38 league goals across 17 games, the most in Italy’s top flight, and are generating chances with an incisive blend of positional movement and transitional speed.

Inter’s ability to turn turnovers into goals – leading Serie A in goals from high turnovers – has been a key indicator of their attacking identity under coach Cristian Chivu.

Contrast that with some of their rivals. Napoli and AC Milan remain in close pursuit, but neither has produced the same consistent cutting edge. Milan’s narrow 1-0 win over Cagliari earlier in the week was a testament to a side grinding out results rather than blowing opponents away, and Napoli have yet to find a similar level of attacking fluency that can shift the goal differential needle week after week.

Inter’s front line has not been immune to criticism – there was a rare setback in the derby loss to AC Milan in late November – but that defeat feels like a blip in a campaign defined more by forward momentum than regression.

Their blend of experienced goalscorers, creative midfield support and an increasingly cohesive tactical shape has seen them unlock defences across the country.

As Inter approach the midpoint of the season with the highest scoring record and a full complement of attacking weapons firing, the sense among supporters and pundits alike is that this could be the moment their title challenge crystallises. In a league where a single goal can define a title run, Inter’s recent scoring punch might just be the curtain call for the chasing pack
