On a late third-and-three possession with his San Francisco 49ers trailing the Seattle Seahawks by three points Sunday, Brock Purdy took the snap from the shotgun and instantly realized he had nowhere to go.

What’s worse is the Seahawks’ pass rush flushed the quarterback out of the pocket, forcing him to improvise … and boy did Purdy do just that.

Rolling right to keep the play alive, Purdy threw the ball up for grabs in the end zone. Sandwiched between two defenders, Jake Tonges leapt up and hauled in what turned out to be the game-winning four-yard touchdown with 1:34 left. Making the play all the more special was the fact that it marked the tight end's first NFL reception.

A sack on Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold later and forced fumble recovered by San Francisco sealed the Niners’ 17-13 road win at Lumen Field in Seattle.

Purdy finished with 277 yards passing and two touchdowns with a pair of interceptions.

Purdy leading San Fran on a seven-play, 68-yard drive to deliver that game-winning touchdown had to be a reassuring sight to the Niners’ faithful after the QB signed a five-year, $265 million contract extension over the offseason.

With a Week 1 road win recorded, Purdy and the Niners (1-0) will face another stern test next week when they visit the New Orleans Saints.
