Philadelphia Eagles braced for key departure hours after Super Bowl LIX victory
The Philadelphia Eagles are celebrating their stunning 40-22 victory over the two-time defending champion Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX, but are set to quickly lose one of the key cogs in the machine that swept to glory.
Successful NFL teams nearly always suffer a ‘brain drain’ following big wins, where members of their coaching staff are poached by other teams offering head coach jobs.
After days of speculation, it would appear that Sunday night’s win at the Superdome was Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore’s swansong with the franchise, as he looks set to become the New Orleans Saints' new head coach.
The Saints opening is the only remaining head coach vacancy in the NFL and it would appear that the NFC South side have been biding their time to appoint Moore, with Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie appearing to concede that Moore will soon be gone.
“Unfortunately, we’re gonna have to wish him the very best with New Orleans,” Lurie told Yahoo Sport.
“Very smart coach who was able to adapt our offense week to week (as) needed to win games.”
Should Moore get the nod in the Big Easy, he will replace Dennis Allen, who was fired in November, as the team went on to register a 5-12 record.
The Eagles' 40-22 victory over the Chiefs came at the end of a season in which Philadelphia went 14-3 and set a franchise record for rushing yards, thanks largely to Saquon Barkley’s 2,000-yard season, whle quarterback Jalen Hurts delivered a Super Bowl MVP-winning performance, throwing for 221 yards and two touchdowns, plus running for a quarterback-record 72 yards.
