Connor McDavid stablemate Mattias Ekholm signs three-year contract extension with Edmonton Oilers

The Edmonton Oilers are ensuring that superstar Connor McDavid is well protected for the foreseeable future.

On Wednesday, the team announced it has signed defenseman Mattias Ekholm to a three-year contract extension worth $12 million. The deal will begin in the 2026-27 season. If Ekholm hadn't signed a new deal, he would have been a free agent after the season.

The 35-year-old had 33 points (9 goals, 24 assists) during the 2024-25 campaign. He was third on the Oilers with an average of 22:11 ice time per game.

The retention of Ekholm comes two days after the Oilers signed McDavid to a hometown discount with a two-year extension worth $25 million and fellow defenseman Jake Walman to a seven-year deal, $49 million extension. 

The Oilers are looking to break through after making the Stanley Cup Finals the last two seasons, but came up short both times to the Florida Panthers. The team begins the 2025-26 season on Wednesday night as they host the Calgary Flames.
