Liverpool earned a hard-fought 0-0 victory at Emirates Stadium against league leading Arsenal on Thursday and showed that they "can compete" against the best in the Premier League, according to midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai.

The defending champions travelled to London to face the Gunners in the marquee showdown of Matchweek 21, with Liverpool having already won the reverse fixture and looking to throw another wrench into Arsenal's title aspirations.

A driving rain set the tone for a 90-minute battle between a well-matched pair of teams, who took turns controlling the game until eventually sharing the spoils.

For Szoboszlai, Thursday's result was another indicator of Liverpool's true standard after the team continues to recover from a brutal losing stretch earlier in the campaign.

"We faced an unbelievable team," Szoboszlai told Sky Sports moments after the final whistle. "We showed again why we became champions last season.

"This was a step forward after recent weeks and, yeah, we showed again against a team that is top of the table we can compete and we need to take it with us for the next weeks."

Thursday's match was a battle in both the metaphorical sense and the real sense, as the teams nearly came to blows following Conor Bradley's apparent knee injury in the dying moments, with Arsenal's Gabriel Martinelli shoving the prone Liverpool right back and causing a scuffle as Bradley's teammates responded in kind.

Szoboszlai lauded his side for their spirit throughout the match, including the stoppage-time tussle.

"I think it's always about fight because in the Premier League you have to fight to get results and today each of us, everybody, showed we are able to do it," he said. "We have to keep on going and work as hard as we did today."
