No visiting team had ever won a match at Old Trafford after having a player sent off.
Until Monday, that is.
Everton claimed a 1-0 victory over Manchester United despite playing with 10 men for nearly 80 minutes, becoming the first team in history earn a win while undermanned. Idrissa Gueye was sent off in the 13th minute following a bizarre sequence that saw the Toffees midfielder get into a physical altercation with teammate Michael Keane, setting the table for a white-knuckle ride for the bulk of the match for the visitors.
However, despite Man United taking 23 shots over the course of the game, it was Everton who scored the only goal of the match through Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall's 29th-minute right-footed strike.
"I found myself in a little pocket, Jimmy [James Garner] found me and I thought to myself that I was going to swing it on my right," Dewsbury-Hall told Sky Sports. "I can't say I've done that many times on my right foot. I didn't even know I had that in my locker, but I'll take it."
As for Gueye's sending off, Dewsbury-Hall called the incident "avoidable" and praised the team as a whole for succeeding despite the strange scenes between teammates.
"It was just a moment of madness. It was obviously avoidable," he said. "All I can say is Idrissa apologised to us all at half-time and said his piece. That's all he can do and we move on from it.
"The reaction from the lads after it was unbelievable, top tier. We could've easily crumbled, gone in on ourselves and lost the game comfortably, but it probably made us grow even more as a team.
"The manager just said he would deal with the situation another time and it was just about keeping to the plan that we had. He just wanted us to continue what we were doing and focus on the things we can change."
