Ex-Premier League striker cites the reason he thinks The FA went for Thomas Tuchel as new England boss
The German will take over from interim boss Lee Carsley in January, but his appointment has divided opinions down to him not being an English name.
Speaking exclusively to DAZN via Goplay.se, former Premier League striker Brian Deane has waded in on the debate over the new Three Lions boss.
Deane believes The FA have taken a step back from the long-term plan, but can see the rationale in making the former Chelsea boss the new coach.
"I’m a fan of his, and he’s a very technical, bright manager," he said.
"I would have preferred to have seen an English coach, and we have talked so much about the progression from the U18s to the U21s to the first team, and then we have signed someone on an 18-month contract.
"We have signed someone who is there to win and that’s the first thing he wants to do, so I don’t think he will be looking at that progression path.
"People might say that we want to win, but I think that there will be some very good players from a long-term development standpoint missing out, and this seems like a short-term we need to win it next time around approach.

"All the work that was done previously was a long-term project, and that might unravel now we are taking a different direction.
"Thomas Tuchel may possibly be the difference though, and he has won tournaments at the top level, and we are talking about a work-in-progress with regards to English managers not having won the FA Cup or the Premier League, so you can’t blame the FA for looking for someone who knows how to win.
"I think a lot of people in the country would have liked an English manager, but they have to balance how the team has progressed over the last 6 or 7 years, and look at how they want the team to progress moving forward."
