Jordan Morris has gotten a taste of the FIFA Club World Cup, and now he's eager for more as the Seattle Sounders will play three matches at this summer's expanded tournament in their home stadium.
The Sounders are one of two U.S. sides taking part in the 2025 edition, which boasts 32 teams from around the world. Unlike Lionel Messi's Inter Miami, the Sounders won't have to travel for their group stage matches as all three of their Group B games are scheduled for Lumen Field.
For 30-year-old Morris, who has spend the bulk of his career with hometown Seattle, the chance to play FIFA Club World Cup matches on home soil is a massive opportunity.
"Yeah, really looking forward to playing these games at Lumen Field," Morris told DAZN. "Hopefully that home field advantage will be an advantage for us, and I think it’s a special opportunity for our fans, you know, they deserve it.
"I’m sure a few of them travelled out to Morocco to see us play in the last [FIFA] Club World Cup, but to have this experience at home in front of our friends, in front of our family, to be able to have my family at the game, playing against these heavyweights of the world, it’s going to be amazing and our fans are going to give us that advantage to push us forward. So we’re all really looking forward to playing at home."
As Morris alluded to, this summer's competition will be the second FIFA Club World Cup to feature the Sounders, as the MLS outfit also took part in the 2022 edition after winning the CONCACAF Champions League that year. However, it didn't go well for the two-time MLS Cup winners, as they were defeated 1-0 by Egypt's Al Ahly in the second round — the first and only match to feature the Sounders in that tournament.
With the expanded tournament guaranteeing all participating clubs at least three games, and with all three of the Sounders' group matches to be played in Seattle, Morris and his teammates look to this summer as a chance at redemption.
"It’s a big source of pride for us to be one of only two MLS teams playing in this tournament," he said. "You know, obviously we were the first MLS team to qualify for a [FIFA] Club World Cup, which was an incredible experience, playing over in Morocco.
"It was a short-lived tournament, we lost the first game and I think for the coaching staff that were there, the players that played in that, it left kind of a bad taste in our mouths. So we’re looking forward to having another opportunity to represent the league, to represent this city, to show what this league can do against some of the best teams in the world.
"We understand our responsibility, and we’re super proud to bear that, and we’re looking forward to proving what we can do."
