Fluminense vs Chelsea team news and talking points

Fluminense, captained by ex-Chelsea star Thiago Silva, have flown the flag for Brazilian sides quite superbly during the Club World Cup.

They finished second in Group F, then beat Inter Milan 2-0 in the Round of 16 to cause a major stir.

They followed that with another hugely impressive 2-1 victory over Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal in the quarter-finals.

That has encouraged hopes they can overcome Chelsea and reach a second successive final; they reached the 2023 final but lost 4-0 to Manchester City in Jeddah.

Mathues Martinelli - scorer of Fluminense’s winner against Al-Hilal - and Juan Freytes are suspended for the semi-final after being booked in the quarter-final tie.

Experienced defender Rene is available for selection, having been banned against Al-Hilal. Thiago Silva is expected to lead the defence against his former club.

Previous XI : Fábio; Freytes, Thiago Silva, Ignácio; Fuentes, Nonato, Bernal, Martinelli, Samuel Xavier; Cano, Arias

Chelsea

Chelsea are aiming to become FIFA Club World Cup winners for the second time, having gone all the way under Thomas Tuchel in 2021.

They are a very different beast under Enzo Maresca, who is writing a new chapter with a team flooded with youthful promise.

But having won the Conference League and qualified for the Champions League, the Italian has taken the Blues into the last four of the Club World Cup.

They showed their class by beating Benfica 4-1 in extra-time in the Round of 16 before dispatching Palmeiras 2-1 in the quarter-finals.

Moises Caicedo is available again after suspension, but Liam Delap and Levi Colwill are now banned after being booked against Palmeiras.

Meanwhile, Enzo Maresca will check on the fitness of Benoit Badiashile, Romeo Lavia, and Reece James.

Previous XI : Sanchez; Gusto, Chalobah, Colwill, Cucurella; Andrey Santos, Enzo; Neto, Palmer, Nkunku; Delap

Fluminense vs Chelsea prediction

There has been much to admire in Fluminense's journey to the semi-finals, but overcoming Chelsea could be a step too far.

The Blues have plenty of attacking talent within their ranks and, despite Liam Delap missing this match through suspension, Cole Palmer can inspire them to another narrow victory, possibly in extra-time.

Prediction: Fluminense 1-2 Chelsea
