Everton returned to winning ways on Sunday, claiming a 1-0 victory over hosts Aston Villa to climb back into the top half of the Premier League standings.

Thierny Barry's 59th-minute goal was the difference between the teams in a venue that Everton manager David Moyes called "never easy," as the Toffees bounced back from a disappointing exit in the FA Cup to earn three important points in the league.

"It was magnificent, Moyes told Sky Sports. "It's been a pretty difficult week for us but we got over that.

"Coming here is never easy. The boys started well and we took confidence from it. We hit the post right away. Overall, I'm really pleased with the performance."

Midfielder James Garner, whom Moyes believes should be in the mix for England, described Sunday's match as a grind and commended his team for adhering to their gameplan at Villa Park.

"They're a very good team and they have a lot of brilliant players," Garner told Sky Sports. "The lads grinded it out today. We got the chance and we took it.

"We tried to nullify what they're good at which is playing through the middle. We tried to block of the passing lanes and force it wide. We waited for our moment."

Everton were on the wrong side of most of the post-match statistics, including possession, shots and passing, but Garner credited the team for fighting through the adversity against a side in the Premier League title hunt and coming away with the victory.

"We were in a sticky patch," Garner said. "We had to get ourselves out of this. To win away from home is hopefully the start of it.

"I think it was an amazing performance from the lads."

Moyes echoed Garner's sentiments, adding: "It's in the DNA at Everton, we can dig wins out."
