The hits just keep coming for Manchester United, who lost their captain, Bruno Fernandes, to injury while also losing 2-1 to Aston Villa in a match that Ruben Amorim called "unlucky."
Fernandes was forced to leave Sunday's game at halftime, after appearing to favour his right leg during the final stages of the opening frame.
After the match, Amorim confirmed that Fernandes' recovery will "take a while" amid a busy period of fixtures for the Red Devils.
"I think it's soft tissue," the Man United manager told Sky Sports. "So, it's going to take a while. We'll see.
"It is really strange. During this year, especially at this time, we have so many problems, but we have to cope with that."
While Amorim does not yet know the extent of Fernandes' injury, he believes the 31-year-old will miss numerous matches.
"I don't know, I think he is going to lose some games, but I don't know for sure," Amorim said in his post-match press conference. "I don't want to talk about the matter; it is a guy who is always fit, and he has shown he can always recover."
Fernandes' injury comes at a terrible time for the Red Devils, who also saw youngster Kobbie Mainoo miss Sunday's game due to an issue sustained at training the day before.
Man United are already without AFCON participants Noussair Mazraoui, Amad Diallo, and Bryan Mbeumo, as well as defensive stalwarts Matthijs de Ligt and Harry Maguire through injury. They were also without the services of Casemiro during Sunday's loss, but the midfielder will be eligible for their Boxing Day clash with Newcastle United after serving a one-match suspension for yellow card accumulation.
