Scott McTominay is Napoli's man for the big occasion

Scott McTominay has always had a knack for arriving at the right moment.

On Saturday night at San Siro, with Napoli chasing the leaders and staring down one of Serie A’s most imposing home records, he did it twice. Two goals, a 2–2 draw away to Inter on 11 January, and another reminder that McTominay is increasingly Napoli’s player for the biggest occasions.

Antonio Conte’s Napoli have not been short of intensity this season, but nights like this demand more than structure and aggression.

They require nerve. McTominay provided it. His first goal, a late run into the box finished decisively, punctured Inter’s control.

His second, a powerful header under pressure, rescued a point when defeat seemed the more likely outcome. Napoli did not dominate possession, nor territory, but they stayed alive because McTominay understands moments.

That understanding has been central to his rise in Naples. Signed initially as a functional midfielder, he has grown into something more valuable: a problem-solver. Conte has used him as a box-to-box presence, a late-arriving eight, and occasionally higher up when Napoli need to attack second balls and defensive gaps.

Wherever he starts, McTominay’s influence tends to peak when the stakes rise. Big games compress space and time; his physicality and timing thrive in that chaos.

This is not new. With Scotland, McTominay has built a reputation on decisive goals in qualification campaigns and tournament-defining matches.

His scoring record for his country has often outpaced expectations for a midfielder, and the pattern is consistent: crucial goals against strong opponents, often when Scotland are under pressure. Napoli are seeing the same trait translated to club football, but now at a higher tactical and technical level.

What has changed is the context. At Napoli, McTominay is surrounded by players who can exploit the advantages he creates. His off-ball runs drag markers, his aerial presence alters defensive priorities, and his willingness to take responsibility late in games has earned trust quickly.

Conte values players who can impose themselves emotionally as much as tactically, and McTominay has become one of Napoli’s emotional reference points.

The draw at Inter may yet prove pivotal in the title race. Napoli left Milan without victory, but with momentum intact, and with one clear takeaway: when the game tightens and the margin for error disappears, McTominay does not shrink.

He simplifies. He arrives. And more often than not, he delivers.
