Premier League weekend wrap-up: West Ham's woes, Chelsea and Arsenal open the floodgates, and Spurs remain a thorn in Man City's side

The Premier League delivered an action-packed weekend with highs, lows and everything in between.

We saw some title hopefuls dominate while others faltered, and a new stadium hosted its first league match.

There is still one more game left to play on Matchday 2, but with the weekend in the rear-view mirror here are some of the bigger talking points of the action so far.

West Ham are in real trouble

The Hammers fell by three goals to newly promoted Sunderland last week to kick off their league campaign, indicating that this season could be a troublesome one for Graham Potter's side.

Well, things only went from bad to worse when West Ham played their first match of the season at the London Stadium on Saturday, as they were humiliated 1-5 by visiting Chelsea. Despite Lucas Paqueta's early opener, Potter's men were never in the match as the Blues orchestrated the lopsided result without Cole Palmer in the lineup.

West Ham have now allowed eight goals in their first two matches, with just the one scored, and their next three league fixtures are at Nottingham Forest (Aug. 31), and home matches against Tottenham (Sept. 13) and Crystal Palace (Sept. 20), respectively. It's feasible that they could start the campaign with five losses, and likely a new manager in charge if the worst-case scenario plays out.

As for Chelsea, they bounced back nicely from a frustrating opening draw against Palace and looked every bit the dominant side they hope to be this season. Brazilian teenager Estevao started in Palmer's absence and gave flashes of his world class potential, putting a cherry on top of an all-around good day for the Blues.

Spurs continue to be Man City's Etihad bogey team

City x Tottenham

Tottenham are coming off an objectively horrific Premier League campaign but one of their silver linings from the forgettable 2024-25 season was a four-goal victory over Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium last November.

It was a stark anomaly for Spurs, who finished 17th after suffering 22 league losses, and it was such an outlier that much of the pre-match narrative ahead of Saturday's early kick-off surrounded City's potential "revenge" for the defeat.

Pep Guardiola played down the revenge angle in his pre-match comments however, stating such a narrative "makes no sense" given that both teams have rebuilt over the summer and Tottenham have a new manager in Thomas Frank.

Unfortunately for Guardiola, his comments ultimately proved erroneous as Spurs once again kept City off the score sheet on their own turf, winning 0-2 and looking rather convincing along the way. The result means that not only have Tottenham won back-to-back league matches at the Etihad by a combined 6-0 score, but that the North Londoners are actually undefeated in their last three visits to City's home ground.

Overall, Tottenham have lost just once in their last five matches at the Etihad, and perhaps a bit of vengeance-based motivation from Guardiola would have helped changed the narrative.

Arsenal explode but lose key figures

In another case of a Premier League manager's pre-match comments betraying him in a contest against a North London team, Leeds United boss Daniel Farke remarked that the newly promoted side would not "sell our DNA" when facing the big boys of the top flight this season.

Farke prefers his team to play on the front foot, and it worked well in their first match of the season against Everton.

“We hardly conceded a chance against us on the first game day and we will try to do the same also in the difficult away game,” Farke said of that 1-0 win against the Toffees, but he was made to eat his words less than a week later as Arsenal scored at will in a 5-0 victory that also saw Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard leave early due to injury.

The Gunners will be overjoyed by the performance and result, and especially that their new striker, Viktor Gyokeres, opened his Arsenal account with a pair of goals after an underwhelming performance a week earlier.

However, the loss of Saka and Odegaard looms large for Mikel Arteta's side, who hope to finally break through and win the league title this season after three straight runners-up finishes. Such key losses could throw a wrench in their plans, especially after Kai Havertz went down to injury last week.

There's no place like home for Everton

The aforementioned Toffees stumbled out of the gates in their first match of the young campaign, losing 1-0 at Leeds United to kick off a season that they hope will be one of much improvement.

Everton have brought in several new faces, led by Man City loanee Jack Grealish, as they aim to make their first season at the marvelous Hill Dickinson Stadium a memorable one.

After their opening day stumble, a nervous home crowd packed Everton's new home ground hoping to have something to cheer about, and they were rewarded in kind as David Moyes' men produced a 2-0 victory over Brighton to inaugurate the new building.

Grealish's fingerprints were all over the victory, as the England international assisted on both of Everton goals.
